La Colombe D’or Hotel

You know that moment when you step into a place, and it's like all the stars have aligned to create a harmonious ambiance? From the decor that oozes sophistication and style, to the delicious culinary offerings, the mesmerizing art on the walls, the meticulously crafted libations, and the gentle, inviting atmosphere that surrounds you – it's as if every element comes together in perfect harmony. It's the kind of experience that's reminiscent of the perfect date, pulling you in with its irresistible blend of charm, sophistication, elegance, and a touch of eclectic flair.

Allow me to introduce you to the La Colombe d’Or Hotel, named in homage to its famous counterpart in France ( that was whispered to have been a cherished hideaway for Picasso). Here, within its doors, you'll discover a true Houston treasure, a luxurious 5-star haven created by Steve Zimmerman.

Nestled as one of the last grand mansions along the storied Montrose Avenue, the La Colombe d’Or Hotel, formerly known as the Fondren Mansion, boasts a legacy dating back to 1923. Originally constructed as a private residence for the visionary founder of Humble Oil, it stands as a testament to a bygone era of opulence and grace. In 1979, the esteemed Zimmerman family undertook a remarkable transformation, turning this historic gem into a beacon of bespoke hospitality for the city of Houston.

Today, La Colombe d’Or is more than just a boutique hotel; it's a cherished Houston landmark. Situated at the heart of the historic Montrose district, this venerable establishment hosts a diverse array of gathering spaces, offering the local community a warm and welcoming embrace. Whether you're looking for a culinary journey in their renowned restaurant Tonight & Tomorrow, an evening at Bar Number 3, or an art lover's retreat with luxurious accommodations and exceptional amenities, this unique destination offers a one-of-a-kind experience steeped in rich history and enduring charm.

Food

Guided by the culinary artistry of Chef Jesus 'JB' Babaran, La Colombe d’Or's in-house dining gem, "Tonight & Tomorrow," offers a delightful French bistro-style menu, where flavors evolve with the changing seasons. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, and the weekend indulgence of brunch, "Tonight and Tomorrow" emerges as the pièce de résistance of this exquisite boutique hotel.

Art

What truly sets this hotel apart is its remarkable art collection, thoughtfully curated by none other than Steve Zimmerman. It is here that one may find one of the most impressive art assortments in all of Houston. Steve's globe-spanning travels have yielded an exquisite collection, and these carefully selected pieces now adorn the hotel's walls.

Spanning a diverse spectrum from Picasso to Dorothy Hood, this private collection, cherished by the Zimmerman family, is a narrative of their profound admiration and respect for the world of art and the places it inhabits. Each piece weaves a unique story and evokes a deep appreciation for the artistic tapestry that graces this exceptional space.

Design

In collaboration with Rottet Studio, La Colombe d’Or offers guests a choice of three distinctive accommodations: The Mansion, The Towers, and The Bungalows, each designed to provide a unique and memorable experience.

The Mansion promises a truly exceptional stay, with each spacious room exuding the charm of a modern bed and breakfast while retaining the grandeur of a 1920s mansion. Illuminated by beautiful chandeliers, it envelops you in an ambiance that evokes a bygone era, all while preserving the charm of a boutique hotel. It's a space that feels light, airy, and profoundly romantic. What's particularly captivating is how each room is inspired by famous artists such as Monet, Picasso, Renoir, and Van Gogh, imparting its own distinctive style and personality.

For those seeking a more contemporary experience, The Towers provide a modern aesthetic with conveniences like freestanding tubs and a refined, muted color palette. Yet, the commitment to exceptional art is ever-present, elevating the entire experience.

Lastly, for extended stays, The Bungalows offer New Orleans French-style apartments, complete with fully equipped kitchens. Bold and vibrant, they utilize artwork and wall murals to infuse each apartment with its own unique flair and style. These Bungalows boast a retro, funky feel, with bold colors, contemporary furniture, and dynamic shapes that bring the apartments to life.

Events

One of the most remarkable aspects of this hotel is its unwavering commitment to providing unparalleled service and extending that same level of care to both its guests and the local community. It's not just about impeccable quality; La Colombe d’Or excels in hosting an array of events that capture the essence of what makes this place truly exceptional.

From movie-themed dinner nights to masterful cocktail-making classes led by their talented bar team, delightful oyster and champagne soirées, to art walks that showcase their remarkable art collection, La Colombe d’Or goes above and beyond in creating experiences that reflect their essence and leave guests yearning for more. I've had the pleasure of attending several of these meticulously curated events, and they stand out for their remarkable attention to detail, top-notch service, exceptional skill, and a profound understanding of the art of hospitality. It's an experience to be reckoned with, one that exudes an inviting, special, bespoke, luxurious, and deeply poignant character.

Bar No. 3

Bar Number 3 at La Colombe d’Or is truly something extraordinary. Despite its cozy size, the atmosphere exudes an infectious energy that's second to none. The bartenders here are nothing short of perfectionists in their craft, expertly concocting cocktails with a distinctive La Colombe d’Or swagger that's impossible to replicate. It seamlessly blends the elegance and personality one would expect from a 5-star hotel with the boundless energy, knowledge, and passion typically found in the bartenders of a craft cocktail dive bar.

A visit to Bar Number 3 is an adventure in itself, a place where you'll never know who you'll have the pleasure of meeting. It's a melting pot of guests hailing from all corners of the globe, celebrities enjoying a quiet moment, local Houstonians savoring the ambiance, and even the owner himself, Steve Zimmerman, occasionally sipping on a glass of wine. There's always something captivating happening at this lively and intimate establishment.

Final Thoughts

La Colombe d’Or has quickly become one of my top go-to destinations. There's a running joke around the compound that residents of the towers hardly ever step outside the compound, and I can understand why. With exceptional food, delightful drinks, engaging company, and fantastic entertainment, why would one ever want to?

My own experiences have primarily centered around dining at the restaurant and partaking in their vibrant events, and each time, I've found myself reluctant to bid adieu. La Colombe d’Or has indeed mastered the art of hospitality, striking a harmonious balance that invites everyone to revel in the joys of eating, drinking, resting, laughing, and merrymaking. It's the epitome of the perfect stay!
