Your Guide to Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is a stunning coastal paradise nestled on the Pacific Ocean in Mexico. With its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, it's no wonder this destination has become a favorite for travelers seeking the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. I traveled to Puerto Vallarta, and I truly understand the allure. It may have been one of the most relaxing vacations I’ve ever experienced! In this article, I’ll give you some of my recommendations for when you go yourself!
History
The area that now encompasses Puerto Vallarta has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations like the Aztecs and indigenous groups like the Huichol people. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century, the region eventually became a bustling port and mining town! Since then, this region has grown tremendously; first gaining international recognition when it served as the backdrop for the 1964 film "The Night of the Iguana," starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. The success of the film put Puerto Vallarta on the map as a tourist destination and since then, it has grown into a popular vacation spot while retaining its charming, historic character.
Stay
We booked our stay at the stunning Westin Resort, which offered the most breathtaking ocean views. The location was ideal, with a 410-foot private beach along the Pacific Ocean, and it was conveniently just a 5-minute drive from the airport. Our stay also included daily breakfast and for dinner, we opted to dine out each night, taking advantage of the proximity to numerous other hotels. This made it easy to find taxis and explore the various places we wanted to experience during our visit. We were also close to many of the tourist info desks, so if we needed to book an excursion, it was right outside the hotel!
Design
The resort's design draws its inspiration from the timeless elegance of Mexican haciendas, incorporating elements like clay tile roofs, wooden beams, wrought-iron accents, and courtyards adorned with lush gardens. This style exudes a rich sense of history and traditional charm that permeates the entire property. I couldn't resist taking photographs in the space and I loved the light and shadows on the walls—it truly added depth and character, elevating the hotel beyond the ordinary resort experience.
The interior spaces are awash with a color palette that reflects the earthy tones found in the Mexican landscape. Warm terracotta, deep wood hues, and vibrant Mexican textiles combine to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that enveloped us. The Westin has done a remarkable job of fusing the essence of a resort with the authenticity of Mexico's historic charm, seamlessly blending the two.
One of the highlights was discovering Mexican art and crafts thoughtfully placed throughout the property. From pottery to sculptures crafted by local artisans, these pieces contribute to the resort's cultural authenticity, offering a deeper connection to the region's heritage.
And when the sun sets, the resort comes alive with soft ambient lighting, enhancing the romantic atmosphere. Pathway lanterns, illuminated gardens, and candlelit beachfront dinners all come together beautifully!
Outdoors, we of course indulged in lounging by the pools and swim-up bars, ordering mojitos and piña coladas. With the soothing presence of the ocean nearby, the design and architecture of the hotel heightened our overall experience, making it one to remember.
Things to Do
Our trip was a delightful mix of relaxation and adventure, and we discovered a variety of activities that I highly recommend:

2. Catamaran Excursion:To truly appreciate the stunning coastal beauty of Puerto Vallarta, a Catamaran Excursion is a must. Enjoy the open sea, bask in the sun, and perhaps even spot some marine life. It's a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the region.
3. Luxury Boat Ride: For a more exclusive experience, consider booking a Luxury Boat Ride Excursion. This package often includes paddle boarding, lunch, refreshing cocktails, and even snorkeling. It's a day of pure indulgence on the water.
4. Dinner and Show: Take your evenings to the next level by booking a show with dinner. Puerto Vallarta offers a range of cultural performances that celebrate the vibrant traditions and music of Mexico. We, for instance, combined a dinner night with a yacht trip to the cultural performance and had an absolute blast.
5. Exploring the Food Scene: Puerto Vallarta is a haven for food enthusiasts. Venture out to explore the local culinary scene, from street-side taco stands to upscale dining with ocean views. Be sure to try traditional dishes like ceviche, tacos al pastor, and, of course, freshly made churros.
6. Arts and Culture: The city is brimming with art galleries showcasing the works of local and international artists. Consider embarking on the annual Puerto Vallarta Art Walk to discover contemporary art and meet the artists behind the creations.
These activities allowed us to delve into the heart of Puerto Vallarta's culture and natural beauty, creating cherished memories that enriched our trip. Whether you're seeking culinary adventures, ocean escapades, or a taste of local arts and culture, Puerto Vallarta has something to offer every type of traveler.
Food
The food scene in Puerto Vallarta is a vibrant exploration of Mexican cuisine. From traditional favorites like tacos and ceviche to fresh seafood dishes and innovative fusion cuisine, there's something to satisfy every palate. Local markets offer a taste of authentic culture, while upscale restaurants provide elegant dining experiences with oceanfront views. While we were there, we of course had our fair share of tacos, ceviches, and seafoods, and we couldn’t forget to savor tequila and explore the bar scene. Final Thoughts
