Your Tulum Itinerary

One of the best ways to celebrate a birthday, in my opinion, is with a trip—a chance to expand your senses and broaden your view of the world. So, when my friend invited me to her 30th birthday celebration in Tulum, Mexico, I couldn't resist! Tulum is a stunning city located near Cancun, known for its captivating blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture.

During our trip, we immersed ourselves in the charm of Tulum, basking in the sun and indulging in the local delights, including my fair share of mezcal! Join me as I share glimpses of our adventure, covering the places you should check out across stays, food, tours and more. I'll provide a sample itinerary and highlight some must-visit places that you should consider exploring on your own journey.

Food

Tulum's vibrant culinary scene is a reflection of its rich cultural heritage, blending a tapestry of Mayan traditions, Spanish influences, and contemporary culinary trends. The region's cuisine is deeply rooted in traditional Mexican cooking, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients. From the street tacos to upscale beachfront restaurants, Tulum offers a diverse array of dishes that showcase the complex layers of Mexican cuisine.

A few things I recommend when you visit Tulum:

Ceviche

Ceviche is one of my absolute favorite dishes to start a meal with. And whenever I travel, (especially if it’s located on the coast of a Latin country), Ceviche is must! In Tulum, fresh seafood is a highlight, and ceviche is a popular dish that showcases the region's bounty. Made with lime-cured fish or seafood, mixed with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and sometimes avocado, Tulum's ceviche is a refreshing and flavorful appetizer.

Street Tacos/ Tacos Al Pastor

As a self-proclaimed taco enthusiast, I of course had my fair share of tacos when visiting. Tacos al pastor are some of my go-to’s, and Tulum's version of tacos al pastor features marinated and spit-roasted pork, often served with pineapple, onions, and cilantro. The savory and slightly sweet combination is a taste of local street food perfection.

Cochinita Pibil

Originating from the Yucatan Peninsula, cochinita pibil is a traditional dish that consists of slow-roasted, marinated pork. Typically served in tacos or tortas, the meat is marinated in achiote paste and citrus, resulting in a succulent and flavorful experience.

Aguachile

I call this ceviche’s hotter sister. Made for those who love spice just as I do, aguachile is a ceviche-like dish where raw shrimp is marinated in a fiery green chili sauce made with lime, cilantro, and green chilies. It's a bold and zesty dish that packs a punch. I had some of the best auguachile in Tulum!

Pescado a la Talla

Are you seeing a trend here with seafood? If not, I suggest you open your eyes and understand seafood is the way to go when you visit. For this dish, grilled fish, often snapper or grouper, is coated in achiote paste and spices, then grilled to perfection. Served with rice, beans, and salsa, it's a delightful seafood option with a burst of local flavors.

aguas frescas

I’m not sure what is in the water that makes their fruit so refreshing and delicious, but it should be studied! I had some of the most incredible fresh made juices in Tulum that allowed me to start my day fresh with a good burst of energy and reset after a night of partying, Those along with açai bowls made for the perfect breakfast. Must try!

MEZCAL

In Tulum and throughout Mexico, mezcal holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.. It’s me, I’m visitors.

Tulum, being part of the Yucatan Peninsula, is not traditionally known as a major mezcal-producing region, (Unlike it’s counterparts, who produce the most Mezcal such as Oaxaca, Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosi, and Zacatecas), however, it has embraced the growing popularity of this artisanal spirit. Mezcalerias and bars in Tulum often showcase an impressive selection of mezcal brands and varieties, providing an opportunity for both connoisseurs and newcomers to explore the diverse and complex world of this smoky elixir.

So, when exploring Tulum's food scene, don't forget to pair your meals with a glass mezcal or aguas frescas for a truly immersive experience. My go to is a passionfruit mezcal margarita!
