Your Houston Texas Itinerary

After living in Houston for 8.5 years, I can tell you that I’ve had the opportunity to try so many places all over the city that I absolutely love and adore, and at this point, I may just be a native Houstonian!

I loved my time in Houston, a city rich in culture, good people, incredible food, and horrible weather (I mean, there is such a thing as too much sun). But, whether you find yourself in the Heights, the south side, 3rd Ward, Sugar Land, Montrose, Jersey Village, and everything in between, Houston has something for everyone!

It was my time in Houston that really exposed me to the hospitality scene, paired with my love of travel that inspired me to start Belles Palate in the first place. The variety of cuisines and the level at which these concepts are executed; you really have no other choice but to be inspired! And I’m not just talking about the food, but the cocktail bars and dive bars are something special in Houston. Many bars have mastered the craft cocktail and have really shown what it takes to consider yourself excellent in the realms of spirits. And can we talk about the art scene? Houston’s art scene just may be its best-kept secret. The city is rich in history and steeped in diversity, talent, and so much more.

But, now that I am no longer in Houston - (SURPRISE!) I’ve built a huge list of all my favorites, to dos, to drinks, and more. Here, I share with you a brief Houston guide, though you can access my master list of recommendations via my yelp links. Know that as I continue to travel, my master lists are always updated! So as I say goodbye to Houston, I welcome you with the perfect itinerary!

Stay

Houston has quite a variance of hotels to stay, and depending on your vibe, and the type of trip you’re planning, you have some options. Boutique Hotels are my favorite when I travel, and though Houston still has a ways to go when it comes to the amount of Boutique hotels, but there are a select few that I recommend.

C.Baldwin Hotel

The C. Baldwin Hotel stands as the epitome of a perfect girls' trip destination! Steeped in intricate details with a fascinating history inspired by Charlotte Baldwin, a trailblazing figure in Houston's real estate landscape, this hotel offers more than just accommodation. With its meticulously crafted design (by Rottet Studio), and spacious rooms, every corner of the C. Baldwin Hotel tells a story waiting to be explored.

The girls and I truly enjoyed our staycation at the C. Baldwin, but what truly sets it apart are the experiences it offers. I’m always a fan of hotels that offer onsite restaurants, because some nights, you just don’t feel like leaving the hotel! So at the C. Baldwin, you can find Rosalie, the onsite restaurant, and if you want a nice pre-dinner drink, you can sip on the delicious handcrafted cocktails at the chic lobby bar, which often hosts exclusive events for its guests. And don't miss the hidden gem of the speakeasy, located somewhere in the hotel!

With its prime location, right in the heart of downtown, impeccable service, and abundance of amenities, you’re sure to have a good time. Prices start from around $200 per night.

Laura Hotel

I absolutely adore the Laura Hotel! It entered my life during a pivotal moment when I was embarking on my creative journey with Belle’s Palate. In the midst of the tumultuous year of 2020, where travel was limited, I opted for a staycation – a decision I'll forever cherish. Formerly known as Hotel Alessandra, the rebranded Laura Hotel is a sanctuary for those seeking a perfect staycation, a solo retreat, or a romantic escapade in the heart of the city.

With its flawless, modern European design, the Laura Hotel exudes an undeniable allure, creating an ambiance that's both seductive and inviting. Its onsite restaurant and bar offer delectable delights, perfect for those evenings when the allure of the hotel bed, adorned with its sumptuous robes, proves too irresistible to depart from.

It’s located in a prime location downtown, with rates starting from around $200 per night. Read more about my staycation at The Laura Hotel here.

La Colombe D’Or Hotel

La Colombe d’Or also stands out as one of my favorite boutique hotels in Houston. Though I’ve never had a staycation here, I’ve gone to quite a bit of their curated events, and they’ve all bee nothing short of amazing. La Colombe d’Or is more than just a boutique hotel; it's a cherished Houston landmark. Situated at the heart of the historic Montrose district, this venerable establishment hosts a diverse array of gathering spaces, offering the local community a warm and welcoming embrace. Whether you're looking for a culinary journey in their renowned restaurant Tonight & Tomorrow, an evening at Bar Number 3, or an art lover's retreat with luxurious accommodations and exceptional amenities, this unique destination offers a one-of-a-kind experience steeped in rich history and enduring charm.

This hotel caters to everyone, whether you're planning an extended stay, a solo trip, a girls' getaway, or a romantic escape for you and your partner. It's a haven for art lovers and one of my favorite dining spots in the city. This is because of their 3 stay options that you have to choose from. If you’re looking for an extended stay, opt for the Bungalows. If you’re looking or a more modern/high-rise stay, then the towers will suite you best. And if you want to truly experience the essence of La Colombe d’Or, stay in their historic mansion-steeped in art, history, with an incredible staff that makes you feel right at home. Rooms for these options begin at ~$400, but for the perfect location right in the heart of Montrose, the restaurant and bar onsite, and the overall experience, it’s quite a steal. Should you decide against staying at the property, I strongly suggest you book a reservation at their restaurant Tonight & Tomorrow and have a cocktail at Bar Number 3. You can read more about my experience here.

  • Thompson Hotel

  • Hotel Zaza (Museum District location and Memorial location, though I prefer the Memorial location)

FOOD

I can't overstate how incredible the food scene is in Houston. If you're not already familiar with it, you're in for a treat! You've heard of the freshman 15? Well, it has nothing on the Houston 20. I've eaten so many delicious tacos over the years that I thought I'd turn into a tortilla. Houston's culinary landscape is incredibly diverse. You'll find the best Indian cuisine, Korean BBQ, Vietnamese food, American fusion, Thai, and soul food. The variety is astounding, and the competition ensures that many places execute their dishes at a high level. Here are some of my favorites and standouts, but for my master list that's updated as I discover new places, you can follow our Yelp link below.

ART

Houston’s art scene might be its best-kept secret! From privately-owned galleries and museums to artist studios, Houston’s art landscape is vast and largely undiscovered by many. I've encountered some of the most incredible exhibits and artists here, and I can see the creative community continuing to thrive. Some of my favorite galleries include:

  • Spring Street Studios/Winter Street Studios

  • 4411 Montrose Collective

  • Fine arts museum

  • Insomnia Art Gallery

  • Menil

Drink

There’s nothing quite like savoring a fine wine or a meticulously crafted cocktail, and the way it's presented speaks volumes about a bar or restaurant. The true marvel of Houston lies in its abundance of establishments that excel in this craft, showcasing innovation and flair that is simply extraordinary.

For your good cocktail or wine bar, check out some highlights of my faves:

  • Refuge - An incredible bar concepted by The Bobby Huegel.

  • 13 Celcius - A perfect wine bar for a night cap! Order the s’mores!
